My Journey To Obama
By Marianne Williamson
I didn't start out with him.
I thought people were projecting wildly onto him, making positive assumptions that he hadn't earned and filling in empty spaces in his resume with mere hopes of substance. But the longer campaign season has worked for me; having watched the candidates move through time, I've seen who's grown and who hasn't. I've ended up – at least for now – with Obama.
I'm perplexed by the question often presented by his opponents, "Yeah, but how is he really going to change things?" To me, he already has. He has awakened the sleeping giant of American democracy, and that is the greatest antidote to every problem we face.
Then there's the "Yeah, but it's all just pretty words" argument. Oh please. Kind of like, "Of the people, by the people, and for the people"? "We have nothing to fear but fear itself"? "Ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country"? And "I have a dream"? Are we to think words never actually changed the world? For me personally, he had me at "Yes, We Can."
Of course, there's the notion that someone else might know what to do from Day One, given how much experience she's already had in Washington. But one of the things I like about Obama is that he hasn't had more experience in Washington. I think he's had just enough to know what he's doing, but not so much that his consciousness has been completely permeated by the rules of that game. When I think of the American government, I'm reminded of a line oft said in Alcoholics Anonymous, "Your best thinking got you here." I don't support Obama because of his position on specific issues; I support him because of his worldview.
To quote Einstein: "We will not solve the problems of the world from the level of thinking we were at when we created them." Obama is a dreamer, and I say Good for him. Only Bobby Kennedy's mythic idealist – who "dreams of what hasn't been and asks 'why not?'" -- will have the power to lead with a new state of consciousness. And nothing short of a new state of consciousness will create a new state of the world.
Obama is a risk -- as is any new President, actually -- because we don't really know where he would lead us. But his main opponent, in my mind, is a greater risk -- because we do. She has clarity and brilliance about a world that is, but he has visions and intimations of a world that could be. He's the natural heir to Bobby Kennedy's mantle of a pioneer who seeks a newer world. There's a wagon train behind him, and I'm on it.
Because I am a dreamer too.

Interesting. I knew I was uncomfortable with Senator Obama's main opponent, but I couldn't quite say why. Ms. Williamson put it so eloquently. Thank you.

Yes, I agree, Obama seems to be a refresher for the USA BUT here is the good news, taking into consideration that I have worked in five countries and deal regularly with diplomats, commerce owners, teachers even media key people and am rarely wrong in predicting the economic/social/diplomatic future of any country I put my mind to, once I gathered the facts and understood the culture:
Because of Obama's big enough following and the need for refreshing the true idea of why America was born (not just to make money and have a better economic life BUT to cultivate a co operation system of trading and cultural differences to understand and use for their strengths) is felt very strongly now. From the war, to a greedy housing market money making by lenders that was here (it will not be now, that is for sure) to the short gains in money via not always well made or/and safe "made in China" actual products used by, for example, in a big way Wal Mart, we can see that times ARE changing in a big way: it seems that greed, politics without to be in touch with the people, not respecting the environment brings harsh and quick lessons now to the folks that do not care enough. Between now and 2012 (even up top 2015) just watch the surge in good things going up and bad going down.
So, whoever is the next new president, IT WILL be good somehow more than it has been for years because those issues not only have got to be addressed but a growing number of businesses and people want it as now it is really for the future of all our kids. So, it is good...America ais young and learning. look at China. Still now, in 2008, they have polluted a third of the Ynagtsee river (and it is nearly irreversible), flooded the markets with now quite some cheap good and even polluted ones too, the women are not yet equal there to men and they cannot leave Tibet alone...They are a 3500 years old country, not a 216 years old one like the USA ( The United States as we know it today really started with the Constitution, which went into effect in 1789, making the current republic 216 years old). China should be wiser and will, by force (boycotts etc...) if necessary will be. Same for countries like Kosovo and Serbia STILL fighting for religion (oh dear) and the list continues. So, the USA seems not to bad suddenly...

Thank you Marianne for spelling out what I think of Obama. Obama stands at the tipping point of the new consciousness movement and as President he will change this country and the world for the better.

Being that I am opening up to a spiritual evolution in myself I am looking at politics very differently. If the universe doesnt make mistakes..then I am supposed to be writing this now..yes? I do have a history though that involves political activism in the pro-liberty sense. So..I am completely stumped why folks see a potential with Barack Obama. Perhaps it is because I saw a true pro-peace , pro-freedom candidate in Ron Paul. I always wonder..if we say we are adults..and that we should 'be our word'..why are we for politicians who do not honor their oath of office? If our constitution is the law of the land..why do we sit by and let Barack/Hillary/McCain and all the rest , at least in part, crap on our constitutiton?
Marianne really got my ear when she was speaking about how being on a spiritual path doesnt mean you cant discuss politics. I am open to anything at this point..and I realize that whoever gets elected it was supposed to happen.
take care,
Bill

Marianne,
My life has been changed by you and your words. I love you. I have to disagree with you however abut Obama. I would like to know if you have personally spoken with HIllary and Obama? I know HIllary peersonally and I must tell you that she too is a dreamer. Aside from the path her campain takes in relation to how they represent her to the people I must tell you that I think dismissing her because she HAS been in politics for a long time is as prejudice as not accepting Obama because he hasn't. Don't you agree. I would ask you to get aquainted with both of them before you make another post out to so many people. No offense but, does your support of Obama have anything to do with your friendship with Oprah. Please don't be offended by that question - I love you and Oprah but I was just wondering.?
there is only love,

I was in the beginning a John Edward's delegate. I believed and still believe he would have been the best president. I feel saddened at the way our elections run. The press has really the influence to make or break a candidate. John Edwards is a victim of this travesty.
So, it comes to now and I need to make a decision. In the last few weeks I have become very firm in my choice. I will not vote for Obama. His relationship with Rev. Wright has definitely made up my mind.
Obama sat for 20years in Rev. Wright's church. He supported him and the church as all of us do for our beliefs. I know I don't attend and support an institution that does not reflect my beliefs. Common sense tells me Obama doesn't either.
Obama came out and tried to distance himself from the radical beliefs of Rev. Wright. Rev. Wright's stand is Obama is a politician. Politicians do what they do. So, my question is - Was Obama distancing himself from Rev. Wright as a politician would? Was this just a political move? Does Obama believe in what Rev. Wright has said? Come on!!!
I want to change the way this country is run. Do I go for the money untruthful way of Bush or do I exchange it for the radical views of Rev. Wright? I will do whatever it takes to steer away from radical actions in what ever direction they will take.
My vote is for Hillary. If she is not the candidate then my vote is for McCain. At least he is a patriot! The least of two evils.
I hope common sense comes into the country..In light and love, Jen

Interesting post and interesting and kind comments, even from those who disagreed. Above all, I value kindness. I have watched in a kind of abstracted amazement as our cache of contestants for President has dwindled to the two choices. I have wondered aloud how a populous and educated nation such as ours could actually finally end up with these particularly difficult two choices. I find it possible that our candidate is not so much one to be chosen at this point as it is one who will evolve and accept change and work through mistakes with honesty and confession of personal and political naivete and progress that way. It is difficult for me to believe McCane will do this at his age and given his prior path. I can't bet on Obama with so little information, such misinformation both pro and con... given his association with the madman that is is minister, given his inability to stand for that man now even though he stood for him earlier??? I just don't know, Marianne. Would you like to be our write in candidate? I say that only half in jest but half in earnest. We do need a thinking, believing, loving, changing individual to produce wisdom, belief, love, and change. ???? I just don't feel solid about anyone in the running.
